the nether
by jennifer haley
directed by jaimelyn gray
Much like an episode of the hit series “Black Mirror” (and one of the most talked-about new plays in recent years), popular female playwright Jennifer Haley blurs reality into a virtual realm known as The Nether. This new form of the internet allows anyone to access a vast network of virtual reality realms. Users may log in, choose an identity, and indulge in any desire. Detective Morris interrogates members of a realm known as The Hideaway, digging into the emotional consequences of its players entertaining the darkest of wants. The Nether is both twisting crime drama and haunting sci-fi thriller. The play is for mature audiences only as it deals with pedophilia, sexual violence, suicide, and other very adult themes.
“The Nether” will be performed at 53212 Presents, a new arts venue dedicated to providing access to affordable rehearsal and performance space in the heart of Riverwest.

"[THE NETHER is] Philip K. Dick's A MAZE OF DEATH by way of the HBO incarnation of Michael Crichton's WESTWORLD in the unflinching intimacy of 53212 Presents…IMPRESSIVE…emotionally intricate…LOVED THIS SHOW…” –Russ Bickerstaff, Shepherd Express (Full Review)
"DISTURBING…CONFIDENTLY DIRECTED…MARVELOUSLY BALANCED…I cannot in good conscience encourage anyone to go to the theater right now. But if you choose to, "The Nether" is an amazing show, and its audience capacity is only 60 people." –Gwendolyn Rice OnMilwaukee.com, gwendolynrice.com (Full Review)
”[An] amazing, frighteningly smart play…If there is a single word for this play, it has two syllables: the first is “mind” and the second rhymes with “luck”….Director Jaimelyn Gray conducts a skilled cast in a tight, disciplined chamber piece, exquisitely paced and rich with contradictory emotions laid out for our delectation.” Jeff Grygny, Play On Milwaukee (Full Review)
